GPS (global positioning systems) technology is used for navigation and security tracking. The US government (in conjunction with other countries and private companies) use 24 satellites in outer space orbiting the planet earth. The satellites transmit RF signals to earth and local recievers (antennas) can get the signal. Then the local reciever electronics (on earth) interpret the signals. Basically, the gps reciever (on earth) intreprets the data from 3 or satellites from the earth atmosphere. That information is converted to positon coordinates for navigation.
Security Tracking: Next, the data recieved for navigation (postion coordinates) can sent to a radio board and then transmitted to other communication recievers. For example, to a base station to track assets. Or then the transmissions can be placed on a mapping to show coordinates.
